    • I tried not to change any of the words of our family genealogy. The telling is pretty much as my mother wrote it. (Inger S. Zumwalt, Starheim). I did however change the order of events to make the story flow easier. So sit back and enjoy.

History: Inger Zumwalt Fresno California May 16th 2000.

      Dear Camella,

I promised you a story of our family history/ ancestors. I?m not very good at writing, but I will do my best. I do have such a great memory that just won?t quit, really. I don?t have much of anything else. Ha ha. Well here goes!!!!

This is what my dad your grandpa (Olaf) told me:

Your Great grandma?s name was Kristofine Josefine Fossheim. She had a sister whose name was Hanna Fossheim. Grandma Josefine was very pretty, and very artistic. Josefine married a man named Helm they had one daughter named Astrid. Astrid was very, very intelligent, and wanted to be a teacherr, but she died of what we call the Pest, you call it the Plague. The pest was brought into Norway by the Spanish ships. Lots of people died. Astrid was only six. (Not sure how one knows that they want to be a teacher at age six). I have one picture of Olaf and his sister, but don?t know what has happened to it. Not too sure what happened to Helm. Maybe Helm also died? Grandma Josefine lived; she operated a very large Victorian guest/boarding house. Josefine fell in love with a regular guest. His name was Wilhelm Starheim. He had a horse and carriage, and worked for the railroad that went between Norway and Sweden. They had a child named Olaf Magnus (your grandpa). Olaf was born in the town of Moss, Norway April 19, 1901 it was a Sunday. Olaf grew up in Bergen in the suburb called Bjorvin (later named Sandviken). Olaf always wanted to learn everything he could so he read, and read all, and everything. He was an A student. Olaf loved music, and it was his greatest wish to become a musician. His mother (Grandma Josefine) did not want him to become a musician not sure why. He did however take music lessons playing the Violin.

Josefine died before Wilhelm and she were married, leaving Olaf a fatherless child. After his mother (Josefine) died, and the large guest house was sold Olaf was put out on a farm to work as a helper with the animals and such. He had his own room, but no table to do his homework. He sat in his little room with a board on his knees, and gloves on his hands, (because it was very cold) and did his lessons for school. The only pleasure he had at this time were the horses that came to his window looking for food. (Horses became Olaf?s mascot).Olaf never gave up. It was not until Olaf became an adult that his father gave him his last name Starheim. Olaf forgave his father, and they became good friends; after all those years. Wilhelm Starheim was tall with a reddish beard, and had blue eyes; he looked very much like Steinbeck.

When Olaf became of age he entered the Kings Brigade. He liked the Kings Brigade in his smart uniform, and all. He became an Officer, and had his own regiment. He was the tallest man of all; he stood out grand. (I have a photo somewhere). He and all the Kings Brigade had to attend a dancing school (this is where he met Hildur, grandma). His first dancing partner became my aunt Tulla. He wanted to dance with Hildur so he asked his buddy to change with him. He got Hildur as a partner not just this one time but always.

When Olaf and Hildur went out on a date they were never alone they always had a chaperon, but one time they managed to be alone and grandma Hildur became pregnant.

Grandma Hildur was born April 24th 1905 in Bergen Norway to Sofie (Bjornestad) Hagland and Engel Andreas Hagland. Sofie had a sister named Gina they were daughters of a Country Sheriff/ Attorney in the fjords of Bergen. They owned a large Victorian house and never had any trouble financially!!! They were pretty tiny ladies short, and sweet.

Sofie and Engel were married and had twelve children. Seven girls and five boys, I will name the girls first: Anna, Astrid, Else, Randi, Hildur, Gunda (died an infant) and Tulla. The boys were Andreas, Haakon, Karl, Sigurd, Sverre. They all married and had kids.

Grandma Sofie was little, but she was strict, and put her foot down brother if the kids did not listen they would be punished royally! Grandpa Engel was tall, and stately he had a curling mustache with soot black eyes, and a deep voice. I never heard him holler, shout or get mad at anyone; all he had to do was look at you with his piercing black eyes!
